Dropbox of tidepooling pics!

Ma Riggs hooked us up with a Dropbox of tidepooling pics.  If you're interested, shoot me your email address and I'll add you to the dropbox.  (This gives us all a SHARED folder on our computers...we can drop pics in, or copy and paste them into our own folders.)
I miss you already...

5/10/12

Will be in my office today--

Swing by anytime!
11am-2pm, 3pm-5pm
Holla--

5/9/12

I'm insane...

...I hate leaving exams ungraded.  So I decided to push through the pain and get 'em done.
I have NOT had any time to do any analysis of your grades.  I just entered your final exam scores...some of you saw significant grade changes.  Nice!
Here are a couple thoughts.
1.  If you want to see your final exam, I will be on campus Thursday.  Probably around 11am...till 2pm?  I have a meeting at 2, but could meet with folks again at 3pm until 5pm.  Those are probably good estimates.   If you want to meet with me, just shoot me an email ON THURSDAY to let me know what time you'll be swinging by.  (If you email me earlier, I will forget about it and might miss you.  If you don't email me at all, I might not show up!)
2.  I WILL be looking at grades with a critical eye and will EMAIL you if there are any changes between the grade in MyCR and the grade I submit to WebAdvisor.  PLEASE (pretty please) do NOT ask me about this.  It will just make me cranky, which won't help your case.  (In case anyone is hyperventilating right now, I would NEVER lower your grade!  The grade in GRADEBOOK 2 in MyCR is the LOWEST grade you can earn in my class at this point!)
3.  I might have some questions for you guys regarding your predictions on your final exam questions.  Please (pretty please?) be available to help me out if I post some questions about this.  I'm particularly curious to hear about the various strategies you employed while estimating your grades.
Good lord.  I'm about to fall out of my chair.  I will be a happier mother tomorrow, to celebrate my little darling's 6th birthday, knowing I don't have a stack of tests waiting for me.
Sending y'all giant hugs, just because I love you!
Nite nite!

5/8/12

...sooo sorry. :(

tomorrow is Kai's 6th bday.

probably won't be done tomorrow either...

Finals won't be done tonight.

finals not graded...

Grades:

I'll post your final grades AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
It was lovely seeing y'all today.

5/7/12

See you tomorrow for the FINAL!

Your summer (and mine!) is about to BEGIN!
Can't wait to see your smart faces tomorrow.
W

Tidepooling!

Totally epic! Sea cucumbers, nudibranchs, urchins (dead and alive), madly diverse sea stars and crabs (how cool was the decorator crab!), chitons...awesome!
Thanks to all y'all, waking up before it gets light and braving that sheer cliff with the rattly ladder, just to come see the crazy cool critters with me.  I loved getting to meet all your significant others.  We should do it again...(but first I need to catch up on some sleep.)
I'm going to miss you guys!  Nite nite!

5/5/12

Tidepooling field trip: UPDATE

Just talked to Patrick's Point...the cost to enter the park is $8/car.
We're meeting at the Palmer's Point parking lot...but there might be limited parking there. If so, you'll need to park at the visitor's center (closer to where you enter the park) and walk to Palmer's Point.
6am SHARP I'm walking down the mad stairs to see the critters galore!  See you THEN!

Oy! 2 chances at the cumulative SLO quiz!

I'll take the higher score.  Feelin' generous over here.
SEE YOU IN THE MORNING, riiiight?!

5/3/12

Th 5/3: Lecture PLAN

Here is our very small list of things to do:
  1. Celebrate Exam 4 and return exams
  2. Talk about the "rate yourself" part of the exam... (strategize for the final)
  3. Discuss course grades and the final exam.
  4. Sign up for testing center final exams...(but we CANNOT all take it in the testing center this time.  They are slammed!)
  5. Get ready for the tidepooling field trip!  YAY!!
  6. Talk about the LAB EVALUATION...do a rough draft in class.
  7. Any other feedback that is relevant?
  8. What is left on your list of things to do?
    1. Quiz 15:  Anonymous lab eval (MyCR)
    2. Quiz 16:  Anonymous course eval (MyCR)
    3. SLO 7 quiz (MyCR)
    4. SLO 8 quiz (MyCR)
    5. Cumulative SLO quiz (MyCR)
    6. Lab 15:  May 6     6:00am     Patrick's Point (Trinidad)
    7. FINAL EXAM:  May 8   10:45am   (LS102)
    8. ????OAAI grant survey????
    9. ????Kaleidoscope grant survey????
That's not bad, is it? See you TOMORROW!

Exam 4

AWESOME!!!  It was an 81% AVERAGE!
19 A's
23 B's
18 C's
7 D's
5 F's

Great job, folks!  I'll give the exams back in class tomorrow and we have about 9898455893845 things to talk about.  We'll probably get finished early though.  Probably.  But maybe not.  Because it is the last time I'll have y'all as a captive audience...I might want to, like, sing you a song or something.
Just kidding.
See you tomorrow!

5/1/12

Week 15

Congrats on reaching the FINAL week of class!  Check out the Week 15 link to see an overview of what's left.  There will possibly be a few more surveys added into the mix, so stay tuned.
Thursday's class will be an important one for cleaning up all the loose ends.  Please attend if you can. I will Tegrity the class (and hopefully not appear as dismal as I did for the Exam 4 review in the middle of the night, ahem) in case you can't make it. But please make it.  It is the last time I get to hang out with all y'all together in one place.  (Unless you count our field trip at 6am Sunday morning.  Wonder what I'll look like then?)
Aiiiiight.  Peace.

Here is an image of the different ways SPECIATION (which leads to macroevolution) can occur.

Or download it here...

Soooo many resources...

There are a JILLION resources available to help you study for Exam 4.  I love you a whole lot, but I'm still awake right now and I'd like to be not awake anymore.  So I'm going to tell you to go FIND all the resources that are out there!  Here is where to look:
Weeks 11-14
Interactive tutorials
If you still can't find something, PLEASE ask each other for help.  Someone probably knows where to find what you're looking for.  I'm optimistic about this exam.  Study and make me proud!

Sample exam #4

Sup y'all--  I just recorded a TEGRITY explanation of the answers to your sample exam.   Study hard for exam 4.  It will be some work, but I'd argue that this is the most straight forward exam of ALL of them.  C'mon!  You can do it!!!

4/24/12

Anyone remember the name of the green fish?

Help!  I can't remember skinny green boy's name!  Anyone?  ANYONE?!!

4/21/12

Lab 11: Some help

Lab 11 interactive cladogram tutorial
You still have over a week to work on Lab 11...but your understanding of the cladograms is important for Exam 4.  So I built an interactive deal-i-o on those cladograms (in Part V of Lab 11).
You can quiz yourself by answering the questions online...then I also recorded an explanation of the answer, so you can understand how I got the answers.  You don't have to do the whole thing...there is a table of contents so you can focus only on the questions you're struggling with.  This interactive is WORTH spending some time on.

4/20/12

Final exam info on Tegrity

Hey darlins...I just sat in my office and recorded a discussion about the final exam...all by myself.  There were only a few parts that I would have loved to edit out...like the random burp at the end...but just as long as no one else on the planet sees it except for you, I'm ok.
It is uploading now...so should be posted in MyCR soon. There you go!

4/19/12

Vote in the poll please!

See it on the right?  Vote vote vote!

4/18/12

Your final exam...

I will have information on your final exam in lecture tomorrow (4/19).  I will make a separate tegrity recording of this part of the lecture so you can refer to it again and again and again and again.  Or not...
AND.  There is liable to be a volcanic eruption (also known as a word I can't write in this blog) if anyone complains (also known as another word I can't write in this blog) about the final.  Spread the word.
See you tomorrow!  <3

11,000 updates...

...and still no XOR-ose metabolizing Avidians.  Are you kidding me?!

4/17/12

XOR-ose eating Avidians...

...my experiment is still running (I'm on update 5000!) and I STILL don't have any critters that can do XOR.  Hmmmmm...what do you think of that?

Sample FInal Exam

Here's the link to the final exam given last semester.  Questions 1-8 are fair game.  I will get you a handout (current) asap...

4/15/12

Don't forget the evolution discussion...

Participation has been sparse this weekend...you'll have to hustle to get a good chat in.

Super late notice--

I'll be at CR today from 12-3pm.  If you want to come study, the lab will be open.
Sorry for the late notice.

4/13/12

Timeline updates...

Hey crew-- I've been working on the History of All Life on Earth activity.
Here is a new handout (cleaner, in order, easier to read, with times NOT in military style!)
And THIS is how much I love you...here's an interactive game so you can PRACTICE putting the events in order.  Let me know if anything is wack-a-doo.

Fodder for evolution discussion...

We're going to look at digital evolution in Lab next week.  There is a reading associated with the lab that you really should do before coming to class.  The entire article is HERE.  Or you can just look at the lab handout, and read the SHORT VERSION.
This would be an interesting discussion topic over the weekend...

WU 22: Single celled critters

Before doing WU22, please define the following terms:
  1. Protist
  2. Eukaryote
  3. Prokaryote
  4. Bacteria
  5. Archaea
  6. Virus
Bring your definitions to class on Tuesday 4/17.

4/12/12

Quiz 12 Handout

This handout will help you with the quiz.  It includes that picture I showed you of HOW speciation occurs.  You'll be happy to have it.
Holla back, yo.

Carl Sagan's Cosmic Calendar

Get your tissues ready...

Evolution discussion board ready...

...let's talk about evolution!  (DUE 4/17 with Lab 12)

4/10/12

Cuttenclip practice

Just a reminder that there is an interactive tutorial for the cuttenclip cladogram exercise...

4/9/12

GRADES UPDATED?

I think so...?  Let me know if there is something I forgot...

WU 18

I graded WU 18...6 pts if you did it in MyCR or turned it in.
FYI...

More exam explanation

Hey y'all-- I've been getting some questions. The exam was out of 104.  One 5 pt question was given the boot (though it became a 3pt bonus question).  So the new total was 99...and I subtracted your MINUS from 100...then made 98 the high.
Bottom line:  (Your score/98)x100 = the number I reported in MyCR.
Crystal clear, huh?

Exam 3 graded!

High:  98/100
I will give you back your exams in Lab this week.
Make sure you bring Lab 11 to lab this week...we'll still be using it!

4/6/12

Haven't started grading exams yet...

...just in case you were waiting on the edge of your seat for results.
(But the fellas and I had a great date-day today.)  I'll let you know AS SOON AS I get them graded.  I hate to make you wait like this...need more hours in the day.

4/5/12

Quiz 11 handout...

These 5 images will be used on your quiz this weekend.  It might be helpful to have a hard copy of them.  There are 3 trees, 1 dichotomous key, and 1 image of superposition.
Holla back, yo.

4/4/12

WU 19

To do the warmup questions, you can read through Evolution 101.  Or google for the answers..?

Practice with the Cuttenclips

This offers some very BRIEF practice with making Cuttenclip trees...but it might help you understand the lab better.

LAB 11

I recorded tonight's lab in Tegrity.  I made some small adjustments to the lab and it will NOT be due until...well...I suppose you don't have to turn it in until Exam 4 (May 1).
Does that mean you won't work on it?  If so, I will regret this move.
I AM working on an interactive tutorial for the Cuttenclips...so you can practice putting weird things into trees.
(Which means your exams are not getting graded...probably won't happen by Thursday.)
Nite nite...

4/2/12

Study session posted in Tegrity

FINALLY!  I gotta see why these upload so slow.  Seriously.

Lab 10 key

Thanks for the reminder Swing-dogg. Here is a key for your lab.

4/1/12

Sloooooow upload...

Not feeling optimistic that the study session will be posted before y'all go to bed tonight...just wanted to keep you in the loop.

Study session being uploaded...

It is 67% finished. WISH WE HAD WIRELESS ON CAMPUS...ahem. The study session lasted almost 2 hours, with only a few unproductive asides. Pretty good, for me...

3/31/12

Lecture 18 UPLOADED!

Phew!

Lect 18 Tegrity....

Why won't it upload??? I'll leave my computer on all night, and hopefully it posts SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON. Nite nite...

3/30/12

Lab 11

Just a reminder to MAKE SURE you attend Lab 11 next week, even though it is right after an exam. Lab 11 forms the FOUNDATION for the rest of the semester. If you miss it, you WILL be very very behind. Additionally, it will certainly go the entire 3 hours. I'll bring chocolate. <3

3/29/12

Ode to the MOTHER!!!

FABULOUS!!!!  You HAVE to watch this thing!  Thanks Kline!!!

Heredity problems in lab 10

I will get you a key on Sunday.  In the meantime, help each other out.  Discussion board?

EXAM 3: Info for you.

Aiiiight.
The exam is worth 104 points.
45 multiple choice (1 pt each)
about 10 defenses (2 pts each)
7 short answer questions (5 pts each)
It is 6 pages long.  If you are worried you won't have enough time, you MUST email me and ask for an exam in the testing center.  (It is 6 pages long because there are 2 large karyotypes.  Otherwise I could have fit it on the typical 4-5 pages).
I don't think it is that hard...but I'll see you on Sunday for the study session.  Holla--

Co dominance vs incomplete dominance....

These WILL be on your exam.
Blood types are an example of CO-DOMINANCE...both dominant alleles are equally expressed.  In AB blood, there are A antigens fully expressed AND B antigens fully expressed.
Pink flowers are an example of INCOMPLETE DOMINANCE...the heterozygote has an intermediate phenotype between the homozygotes.  (Ex:  Red flowers are dominant, white flowers are recessive...and pink flowers result from the heterozygous genotype.)
Here's a lecture by old boy...well, I have no idea who this guy is, but his explanation is accurate.
Shoot me questions if you have them!
